After her apprenticeship as a goldsmith, Simone Geißler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, Germany. She completed her studies in 2006 as a master student (“Meisterschülerin”) and subsequently opened her workshop gallery in a historic building in Nuremberg’s Old Town, where she shows her own work alongside the pieces of other jewelry designers and artists. I bought the PUK to increase my possibilities in materials and techniques. After an initial period of experimentation to get to know the device, I made my first work with it, The Utah Teapot. I entered it for the 18th Silver Triennial International and won first prize, the Ebbe Weiss-Weingart Prize.

Jury statement: The sculptural quality of the object The Utah Teapot is impressive. The classic form of the teapot has been skillfully altered through breaking it down into facets, while its function as a pot has been convincingly nullified: the lid cannot be opened, the pot has no bottom, and the spout is closed. Through the use of a 3-D computer model of The Utah Teapot from 1975, an exciting further development of the application of digital media has been achieved. The execution took advantage of the PUK welding technique for the decoration of the object; the surface is confident in its sensitivity and elegance.

Next to making connections that are difficult or impossible with conventional goldsmithing techniques, I also often use the PUK for pre-fixing difficult silver solder joints and making my own tools and accessories.

The great thing about a PUK is that it works very intuitively, you don’t have to be a scientist to use it, especially if you always make some tests, first.

The device is in line with the way of working that suits a goldsmith, it requires – and shows – the motor skills of your hand, because you can always hold your workpiece in your hand during welding, not much different than sawing, filing or even drawing … almost like handwriting.

Having already worked with the PUK 2 from Lampert, I immediately bought the PUK 3 professional plus when it came out. It has almost the same possibilities and applications as a laser but you pay less. It is built as a tank so it has little to zero maintenance. After my apprenticeship, I have learned one more enriching technique besides the typical craftmanship – using a PUK welder.
It makes my daily work much easier and I really enjoy working with it every time because it offers completely new opportunities, e.g. when working close to sensitive stones e.g. when working close to sensitive stones I can also close pores quite easily and/or apply additional material. The PUK device is very easy to use and allows countless ways to process or remodel jewelry without much effort.

I am an orthodontist and I love working with my patients. But I also like to work behind the scenes making some of the appliances I use. The PUK D5 opens a whole new world of orthodontic appliances’ design possibilities. Plan the design and just implement it – nothing is impossible! We have to carry out a broad variety of works in our goldsmith’s workshop of the abbey. From filigree engagement rings made from platinum to rather big sacral utensils made from silver or tombac. Therefore, all of us in the team benefit from the PUK 4 and its diverse areas of application. It is a great help to us in goldsmithing, repairing or making new church decorations.

Our PUK has now become an essential part of our workshop, and there is hardly a repair challenge that we cannot master safely with it.

The PUK is ideal for the finest work as it generates very little heat, especially in critical areas. Thus, it is possible to weld near precious stones and pearls. Because of the locally very limited heat generation, the workpieces can be held quite easily in the hand during welding – therefore no binding wire is needed for subsequent soldering, and there is no need for elaborate pre-positioning of the parts. We are able to work accurately and efficiently, avoiding time-consuming manufacturing and repair processes For very complex objects, we occasionally even use the PUK to position claws before we then solder them.

It is however, worth mentioning that using the PUK welder is a skill that has to be learn You have to spend time becoming accustomed to using the machine, in order to use it to its maximum capacity.

Practice makes perfect!

For me, as a veteran metal artist specializing in both traditional and modern techniques, my PUK 5 from Lampert has become an indispensable tool for my workshop. The PUK 5 enabled me to significantly upgrade my manufacturing process and provide more freedom with my art designs. The PUK 5 shortens the time it takes to build a construction. It allows handling seams and soldering more effectively and in a shorter time.

This tool is definitely an asset to any artist’s studio!

I have purchased a PUK five years ago to expand my TIG welding to micro level, and never regret for that. Reliability, super easy to start, fast learning curve and lots of hidden capabilities for custom pulse programming – that’s exactly what I was looking for. I would also add the moderate argon consumption and the possibility of micro spot welding. Maintenance is minimal: simply refill the argon cylinder and keep the tungsten electrode clean and pointed.

For North American readers, Robert at Lampert Tools USA in Chicago is incredible at helping with ordering, shipping and delivery. After I received my device, he gave me a free one-day course on the basics of microwelding. In addition, customer service and supplies procurement are fast, friendly and professional. I consider this micro welder to be one of my best tool investments.

Really, not a day goes by in the workshop without the PUK. How quickly this device has become absolutely indispensable was quite amazing, a work process without it seems almost unthinkable to me.

Especially with my kinetic work in stainless steel, joining with the PUK has become child’s play and has also enabled completely new ways of fabrication. Whether for the tiniest mechanical components, fine sheet metal constructions with only 0.3 mm thick sheet metal or large space-consuming jobs, the PUK is used by me everywhere and does its job reliably and in high quality.

From the failed attempt to hide welding points and thus achieve an invisible connection, the subversive plan to deal with the connection points as obviously as possible was born. The result was a design idea that makes the welding spots my main design feature and sets them off like little diamonds. I see, in addition to the various utilitarian applications, that precise technology like the Lampert spot welder can create great aesthetic value. I want my jewelry to reflect that.

The PUK offers clean connections, precise work, new possibilities. It not only simplifies, it paves new ways in jewelry design.

My expectations of the PUK U5+ were very high and were met across the board. Working with the PUK U5+ is very simple and straightforward.

An artist carefully assembles his tools, as he expresses his thoughts and ideas through his hands by means of tools. The high expectations placed on oneself must also be placed on the tool. Therefore, I work exclusively with professional tools and machines.

For the production of my kinetic solar sculptures I prefer to use steel round bars up to 4 mm and sheet metal up to 1 mm thick. In the past years I have tried many techniques to be able to combine these materials optimally. I have used several processes, such as TIG welding, brazing with hydrogen, spot welding or the soft soldering. None of these connection techniques met my high standards.

One day I became aware of the PUK U5+ welding system from Lampert, which I had not known until then. The first-class technical support of the Lampert company was able to advise me “to the point” what the possibilities of the PUK U5+ are.

My expectations of the PUK U5+ were very high. However, these were fulfilled all along the line. Working with the PUK U5+ is very simple and straightforward. It feels like holding a thick pencil in your hand, easy to handle, safe and accurate.

Normally, I only rave about Swiss made machines. However, I was happy to include the PUK U5+ from Lampert, made in Germany, in my machine park.

I have been working with the PUK 2 since 2006, and my favorite cocktail consists of: PUK, Argon and Titanium.

If I hadn’t had the PUK, I wouldn’t have been able to make some of my best titanium objects.

I first used it in making gold and platinum jewelry, especially in the following three areas:

1) When I repair delicate parts with gemstones that should not be exposed to fire, I can work on the gemstones without having to set them out first.

2.) Pre-assembly of complex parts that I will have to solder later on a soldering station and with the help of the torch.

3) Creation of impossible pieces. For example, if you are mounting a platinum band with diamonds running over an emerald, this would be unthinkable using the traditional method by soldering with a flame.

Currently, the PUK is a great help to me in making my objects from titanium and Timascus. So far, I have been able to accomplish everything I set out to do.

I must admit that my PUK 2 is already a very old model, with restrictions for silver and bronze, but otherwise it is a perfect welder, which is also very robust – in 14 years I have not had a single defect.

When I started my own business with my brother, the PUK 5 was our first purchase, along with two workbenches. We both had already had very good experiences with the PUK 2 and 4 and therefore knew that this wonderful device would become indispensable for us.

The PUK can be summed up in one sentence: “easy to learn and hard to master”. Anyone could tack weld and joint parts after a few minutes. But the incredibly diverse possible field of application arises over the time and growing experience Due to the very well calibrated default settings that the PUK 5 comes with, you can take countless challenges directly. With the experience at what angle, from what side and with which setting the respective welds work best, the joints are getting cleaner.

We work with the device on a daily basis and the results are impressive, yet we feel that we have not yet exhausted the “PUK potential”.

With the PUK, I have taken custom remote control model building to the next level!

I am a perfectionist and try to build my remote controlled models with the highest quality and detail. I was looking for a device that would allow me to achieve this goal. I used to not be able to work with steel or stainless steel, and because of the fine detail and precision work, I could not weld with a regular TIG welder. A colleague of mine recommended the PUK, which he saw during a demonstration at a trade show. I contacted the LAMPERT company, explained the situation, and was recommended exactly the configuration I needed. Then, in early 2017, I bought the M200, which was shipped directly to me in Australia. LAMPERT even showed me how to use the device via Skype in a way that was easy to understand. Now, after almost 3 years, I no longer want to do without it. The precision, scale fidelity of the welds and the strength meet my requirements exactly. I can now work with different materials, with stainless steel being my favorite. I can only recommend this machine to any demanding and professional modeler.

Since 2002 we have been using the first model of Lampert fine welding equipment. The PUK 111 is a great welder that we can rely on in our jewelry factory. Almost every day at least 10 goldsmiths are working with it.

The PUK from Lampert – a must for every jeweller

I invested in a PUK 5 welder and was able to obtain a pay back within 6 months The PUK enables me to do additional repair and restoration of jewellery over traditional flame soldering methods through less heat dispersion, pinpoint control and seamless joints. I selected the PUK 5 over other welders for its quality, support service, no maintenance requirements and end welding results.

I have used various models of the PUK over the past 15 years and currently have a PUK 5 at my bench I have yet to find a more versatile machine for a jeweller’s workshop. Only imagination limits application where the PUK is involved. Whether its mounting, repair work, stone setting, engraving, or otherwise, the PUK proves itself invaluable – no matter the metal or alloy.

I made first experience with a PUK back in 2003 in State Drawing Academy Hanau. It was the PUK111 and I instantly fell in love with it.

With PUK’s help I can realize any of my ideas. It makes welding of different metals and combining them with different materials a lot easier.

Especially since I often use very thin metal sheets and wires, the PUK is the perfect tool for me. I had different PUK models in my workshop already – the PUK 3s, PUK 4 and now the PUK 5 – and every new model has offered an increased accuracy and improved welding results.

Doing jewellery repairs, the ability to add small areas of metal is vital and was missing for the first 25 years of my time as a jeweller.
Then I heard about the welders that were becoming available. So I bought a Lampert PUK3S and several years later I am still using it for most of the repairs that I do.

Orthodontic soldering is now a thing of the past. TIG welding is far superior in every way. The possibilities are endless with the PUK D2 TIG welder. Preparation is minimal and joins are stronger and smoother than soldering.

Since I have been using the PUK D2 I have not had any appliance breakages. Many jobs were not possible when I was limited to soldering. Now I can add small attachments to my appliances with little distortion from overheating. Intricate designs are easily and quickly added to any job with minimal preparation. Almost no finishing and polishing is needed saving much time and money. Working under the microscope makes welding much more precise.

Not only is this PUK D2 excellent, the Lampert ambassadors are also very helpful. I had many conversations with them and they were more than happy to help. They always urged me to keep in touch as they want everyone to appreciate this machine as much as they do.

Do you know that sometimes your best ideas reach the limits of what is technically feasible? As an interdisciplinary artist, my visions often move far beyond these technical boundaries. In many cases, I have to develop the necessary tools myself and pursue my projects with considerable limitations and improvisational skills for years. In 2013, I wanted to create polished stainless steel art objects that would have been very difficult to repolish after ordinary TIG welding because of the often difficult-to-reach welds.

Amazingly different is the PUK solution: I was more than pleasantly surprised when I came across the PUK, and the device demo in my studio that I was subsequently offered was terrific. This is a device like I could never have invented or even imagined myself! And it not only solved many problems in the realization of art projects that I already had in mind, but at the same time opened up unimagined possibilities for many more ideas.

have been working with precious metal for almost 50 years and some of my tools were passed on to me by a goldsmith who began work in about 1920. The PUK settled into a workshop where the anvil, planishing hammer and draw plates are used daily.

When the PUK arrived I had a problem to solve. I had just finished a custom ring with a 2.25 carat diamond set in two very wide prongs. I hadn’t gotten quite enough platinum over the diamond to feel secure. After about 5 hours of practice with the PUK I was able to add 0.75mm of clean platinum to the top of the prongs and hammer it down over the diamond. No seam and no porosity. Just like the extra platinum had always been there.

The PUK already paid off here.

Experience with the PUK 3 welder at the Jewellex jewelry show 2009:

“I was on a hunt for a tool machine that is going to help me to make life easy doing fine soldering to chains, retipping claws on pieces without wasting too much time or money

I guess in the last 5 hours of a Jewellex show being the last day, this was going to be a challenge that I never knew was going to make my dream come true. Walking down one of the aisles passing jeweller after show room, I saw a guy doing something weird but it was flashing spark lighting, this drew my attention

A dream started to unfold at that very moment, I stood and watched this gent looking through a microscope and doing something that had blown me away, welding two pieces of metal together. I started asking questions – can you solder, weld a bracelet together without taking coloured stones out? His reply was ‘yes’. Can you weld new claws on to a ring with stones and or coloured stones again? ‘yes’! – I asked if I could try it, so he got up and showed me how to adjust the microscope to my eyes and started welding. Ok at first it was messy, I sat for over an hour experimenting and I was glued to that chair. Honestly, at this time I just had a million mind flashes of what I was going to use my Puk 3 for and how it was going to work for me making life easy and more money with less stress.

Well its now two and a half years later and I have not only used my Puk welder for difficult jewellery repairs, it’s used in my workshop every day. I have also applied it in the opticians world, helping to repair broken frames of glasses, all makes and metals types. It’s amazing, most repairs you cannot even see the repair, as being a micro weld. The real magic using the PUK there is so little heat you hold the piece in your hand and no burns.

I can just say to the team at Lampert never stop creating new technology. You guys are amazing. I don’t know what I would do without my PUK welder.”

The DENTA PUK was already a great machine. I have worked with the DENTA PUK for more than 2 years and could not imagine that there is an even better device. But when I tested the PUK D2, I had to change my mind after all. It is even easier to operate with its touchscreen. Simply select the welding parameters and off you go. Even orthodontic bands with a thickness of 0.1 mm can be welded quite easily. We no longer have to think about soldering in our lab….

I’m a perfectionist who continually develops and researches techniques that will enhance my abilities to perform tasks more quickly and with better results. Many times I receive objects that will be so time-consuming to repair, the customer opts out because of the cost. Because of this, I had decided a couple of years ago to try a friend’s laser welder which would hopefully cut down on the time it took to perform certain repairs. The running back and forth from my shop to his became very time-consuming. In addition, the containment area of this laser welder (as with all laser welders), didn’t allow me to repair larger objects.

This same individual had a PUK 2. He allowed me to borrow it as I knew a laser welder would be too costly to purchase. I immediately found customer jobs that would allow me to put the PUK through its paces. The very first piece I attempted with the welder was a piece of Judaica that had its glass finial broken off. This very thin, coin size piece of glass was surrounded by a saw tooth bezel. Normally, I would have had to unset the glass (very risky because of possible breakage), reattach the finial through brazing, and then reset the glass. This process would have been time-consuming.

Thankfully, the PUK came to the rescue. I was able to weld the finial and add sterling to one of the partially missing bezel teeth touching the glass.

This, of course, would have been unthinkable using a torch, regardless of its size. Using this new technique was very exciting.

A more substantial repair was attempted on a 19th century silver creamer.

The problem was that three of its four legs had been detached and reattached with lead solder. This was an insane act. I was able to remove the lead from the legs, but couldn’t visually inspect the leg support interiors for assurance that I could silver solder the legs back on. Normally, I would have been forced to use a low-temperature tin/silver solder to reattach the legs, for high-temperature silver soldering would have allowed any remaining lead to “eat” the silver. This is where the PUK’s pulse arc technology allowed me to successfully weld with solid sterling wire, giving an invisible and substantially stronger attachment.

Suffice to say, I was impressed with the PUK. Since I work primarily in silver, which is the most difficult metal to weld because of its lack of resistance, I was ready to purchase a more advanced piece of equipment: The PUK 3s Professional. This welder was developed specifically to deal with the idiosyncrasies of silver. But before making the purchase, I wanted to contact tech support, as I had numerous questions. This was going to be the most expensive pieces of equipment I had ever bought, so I wanted to make absolutely certain this was the right decision. I was so impressed with the friendly and helpful support team, both in the US and in Germany, that I was absolutely convinced that this was the machine and company I wanted to be associated with. The three-year warranty also caught my attention!

Naturally when the PUK arrived, I immediately tore into the box and set it up along with the optional pivoting arm that would allow me to work on those larger pieces. It’s a beautiful machine, more like a piece of stereo equipment than a tool for a silversmith. The PUK is easy to use and understand, and I quickly realized how significantly it would enhance my advanced technical arsenal. I know when the next snuff box arrives with a cracked hinge knuckle that I won’t have to disassemble it to perform the repair. Just a few zaps with the electrode will put it back in working order. Isn’t that amazing? Tacking long seams together to be hard silver soldered will save the enormous amount of time it used to take to “wire-up.”

Today, it’s extremely rare to find a company that builds a product to last, that looks great, and provides technical support from individuals who actually use what they sell. And yes, that’s amazing, too!

Saw, file, pliers, PUK, if I had to make a ranking of the most important hand tools in the goldsmith’s everyday life, the PUK from Lampert would be right at the top. Because a small spot weld in between shortens many a work step enormously. I have been working with the PUK for almost 8 years and therefore believe that I know its areas of application sufficiently, especially since I first worked with the predecessor model, the PUK2, for a long time and have recently switched to the Professional plus, which is much better tuned and more mature. If, like me, you work with traditional handicraft techniques and the associated small machinery, you will find something like a Swiss army knife in the PUK. Just so small “annoying” standard repairs like the torn chain repair – spot weld on it ready – I would not want to miss this nice little helper with the name of a child’s bike (PUKY).

PUK welding is not just a new joining technique, it is a fundamentally new method of metal design.

What is unique on the PUK welding technology is a very wide applicability, which can be multiplied in the combination with all conventional gold and silversmithing techniques in many new types of design, whether with classical or less common materials.

PUK Technology is a contribution, an opening of new working horizons, for a highly qualified professional in any metal field, but also for a non-professional or an interested person who wants to deal with metal forming from scratch.

Personally, PUK welding technology has enabled me to do a whole new range of work with titanium and other metal combinations, where I could really unleash my creativity, and I am still not at the end of the possibilities that the PUK welding machine can offer.

PUK fine welding technology is only at the beginning of the real use of its creative and innovative potentials.

The companies Lampert (4x) and Horbach (1x) have provided new welding machines 3s plus, all with Mezzo microscopes and three lamps, in addition we have had two devices of the PUK 2 series.

Of all the workshop participants, no one had any practical knowledge of the PUK fine welding technology or any detailed information about the function of the device. Except that on the table in the goldsmith’s workshop is a device that few use.

About 16 students attended the workshop, and others learned about the function and possible applications.

For all participants, as already mentioned, this was the first contact with a different type of welding technology.

At first, only the function of the device with the different pulse variants was tried out, with the aim of learning the feeling for the pressure intensity when applying the electrode to the material, so that the electrode does not “stick” to the material.

After that, different types of welding such as wire and sheet metal joints and graphic treatment of the metal surface were tried,
then later made small compositions from sheet metal and wire.

The first steps with the new technology were tackled with varying degrees of skill.

In general, it can be said that the students who had a longer practice with brazing technology were better able to use the content basis or the advantages of fine welding technology for their trial work.

Understanding or grasping the PUK welding principle, how and when for which materials this technology can be best used, depends solely on the possibility of having sufficient time to practice with the PUK device.

With the increasing knowledge of the application potential of the welding equipment, creativity and the range of combinations are continuously being developed.

Thus, the FH management is recommended to purchase a PUK device of the 3s plus series.

Especially with the reproduction of the imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empire and the other insignia, the PUK was and is a great help to me. To solder the many, mostly very filigree sockets onto the base plates, the PUK is indispensable for me. Especially with the large silver parts, there is always some distortion that makes soldering difficult….

With the PUK I can fix the sockets and trim parts securely so that they do not move during soldering.

Today, the previously impossible is becoming possible.

Acquisition of the PUK 3 professional plus and how it was integrated.
One day, an advertisement with the general trade press fluttered onto my desk. I was about to put it down when I noticed a box with two buttons and a large display. Looked interesting. What was that box and what can it do? Lampert Werktechnik didn’t tell me anything at that time either. But that was to change quickly.

What I read in the device description made me excited. So you can weld with this device, with and without the addition of external material. Suddenly my interest was awakened. The device promised a lot of possibilities that I had not had before. Above all, to make metal joints that could not and cannot be made even with my hydrogen welder. I suddenly had concrete ideas about what I could do with the device. So I drove to Münster and looked at the device myself. There they were, the three, one more beautiful than the other except for the small “PÜKchen 111” but I didn’t feel like it. No, it was the two devices “PUK 3 professional” and “PUK 3 professional plus” that caught my attention. “Plus” stood there for a bit more bang.

Since I could try out the devices on the spot, it was already clear after a short time, the welding machine with the additional B… it should be. I now had to wait 14 days for the device. Hm, the next question was, where do I put the device? Such a fancy machine on my cluttered table for electronics, big clock repairs, plating, and other rough work, you can’t have that. The infrastructure was already prepared. Cables, electricity and compressed air were all already in place. The hose for the argon was quickly laid.

After a few hours of planning, my workshop became a carpentry shop for several weeks. I made a drawer for the 10L argon cylinder and integrated it into the workbench. When the base cabinets were finished and the 95Kg tabletop was fitted with millimeter precision, it was the turn of the top.

In the meantime, my PUK 3 professional Plus was delivered by Lampert. So I was able to put the “speedster” in the attachment for the first time and make the front frame. Slowly, the setup began to take shape. The aluminum plates with the individual displays were
already made and fitted. The next few days saw the removal of the attachment with compressed air, propane gas , hydrogen gas, argon and the electronics. But also the front panels with all controls were finished. After eight days, the complete attachment with the PUK, the intermediate shelf for soldering accessories and the drawer box was finished.

So that there are not so many cables lying loose on the table, I have combined the supply lines to the microscope for the illumination and the shutter in a braided tube. Plug into the coupling, test run, done.

So I was inspired by the PUK 3 professional plus to set up and build a complete goldsmith’s workstation.

The PUK2 saves me a lot of time in the preparation of assemblies and allows quick repairs even directly on delicate stones.

We have been using Lampert PUK equipment for over two years and have since discovered the limitless possibilities that exist when welding objects made of gold and silver.

Work that until then required a lot of attention and concentration, but still not infrequently ended with repeated failed attempts, has since been forgotten.

With the PUK3, we can perform exactly the precision work that is required today in the world of haute joaillerie. In addition, the PUK 3 is used for very delicate fine welding work, for example on very small clasps, on jewelry with pearls or enamel, and on those with gemstones that would not survive soldering work on the open flame…

The PUK 3 is an easy-to-use device and ideal for professional welding work. We are extremely satisfied with this device and its capabilities. Working with the PUK 3 is pure pleasure.

Working with the PUK opened up new possibilities for me!

I have been flirting with the purchase of the PUK for quite some time.

However, the decision was quite easy for me about a year ago. The decisive factor was the competent advice provided by Thomas Krükkert to the Flume company. After a personal briefing by Mr. Krükkert in my goldsmith’s shop, I had the opportunity to test the device for a week. The result: I was thrilled!

The week was quickly over and the PUK was picked up again. It was immediately clear to me that I had to own such a device. Couldn’t wait for it to finally arrive. Working with the PUK is very easy for me personally and I enjoy it immensely. About 6 months later, during which I had refined my skills, I took part in an advanced training course at the Flume company in Essen. I can only recommend this, because the exchange with like-minded people, as well as the different questions and contingencies of the participants that arise in practice, were critically examined from different angles and gave me another enormous boost of experience in dealing with the PUK.

Working with the PUK opened up completely new possibilities for me. Be it in the field of repairs, but also in the field of processing gemstones completely innovative. There are almost no limits. The service sector should not be neglected either. From soup spoons to eyeglasses, partial repairs are no longer an issue.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the material, there are few materials that “unfortunately” cannot be processed. I emphasize unfortunately, because working with the PUK becomes addictive. I catch myself thinking: I’ll just shoot that!

Everyone who has started with the PUK knows: of course, this does not always work! Again, there are limits, but the enthusiasm to overcome this problem becomes a challenge! Thus, the most terrible repairs become exciting test objects!

Trying it out for yourself! Will I make it? In 90 percent: YES! Last week I instructed my journeywoman in PUK. She was immediately infected.

Same thing with her: PUK fever!

Conclusion: PUK combines fun with challenge and completely exciting possibilities! These possibilities can be increased and exploited depending on the user’s performance. Do without the PUK? Unthinkable!

I’ve been looking for a solution to bring objects chased from sheet bronze together so that the body of the object and the seams/joints form a unity of color after patination. I planned to make not only jewelry but also larger objects such as vases, bowls and serving pieces, containers, etc.

I was able to test the PUK for a week and experiment with it, the result convinced me, I have been working with it regularly for three years now and could see that PUK saved me a lot of time (and nerves) in the production of my objects. The work process is very clean, the welding of long joints look like “stitching”, which I sanded down at the beginning so it looked more like a bronze casting. However, the fine “seams” create an additional charm and if it fits, I leave them, because they give the object a distinctive touch.

Our goldsmith workshop is located in the north-east of my home, and it all started with a hobby in the nineties:

Like all “do-it-yourselfers”, I worked with an open flame, solder and flux, etc. at that time. Then in 2009 we opened our own workshop. On our homepage www.vpgold.ee you can get more detailed information about us.

Today we have quite a large work experience. That is, we perform work of very different complexity, and we try to meet every customer request.

In December 2012, I finally decided to buy a PUK 4, and I can say with full conviction that I am extremely satisfied with the device!

Since then, most tasks are only done with the PUK, and the days when the device is not used can be counted on a few fingers.

Now we do repairs that used to take us an hour in 10 – 15 minutes. In addition, we do not consume solder or time to clean up, as would be necessary after soldering with the flame.

Also, I must note that the PUK 4 is simply irreplaceable when repairing jewelry with stones! Of course, we still don’t completely dispense with soldering, because there are always jobs where it is unavoidable.

We even weld armored chains with a thickness of more than 0.6mm without compromising quality. On the contrary, a chain does not get discolored, as would be the case with soldering: this is a huge advantage! It is somewhat more difficult to weld silver – but this is also feasible. This is probably due to a lack of experience with this metal, but we are always learning, and the sky’s the limit.

I also bought the swivel arm for the microscope. This one helps me a lot when restoring bulky parts. And one could still write so very much good about this device, but unfortunately I lack the time…

When I bought my PUK, the new PUK 4 was introduced at the same time. But the Lampert company kindly changed my order so that I got the new model. And I am very pleased with the functionality! I chose the PUK because you can weld anything with it: Gold, silver, titanium, steel, … Thanks to the microscope, it’s very precise! I can make finer welds than with classic soldering. Once you get the hang of it, the work is very fast and precise. Now I can make repairs to jewelry that would not be possible without a PUK or a laser. The price is also better than that of a laser welder. Once used to it, you can’t work without a PUK!

I have been using PUK technology since 2003 with great success and this has enabled my business to develop over the years. The purchase of a PUK 04 for my workshop has taken me even further.

I made my first contact with the PUK during my master class: Thanks to the good cooperation between the Lampert company and the HWK Würzburg, it was possible for the master students to practice on the equipment for a whole day and gain initial experience. Although I had heard about the existence of so-called fine welding machines before, I had never seen one.

During our “first acquaintance” I was taken with the simple, intuitive operation and diverse function. When I took the job at the goldsmithery Jutta Rother in Neumarkt after completing my master’s examination, the PUK was at the top of my wish list. Purchased soon after, the PUK was immediately put into operation. In an initial burst of enthusiasm, I began welding almost everything: ring rails and handles, locks and claws, eyelets and pins,…

After two years of experience with the PUK, a more thoughtful way of using it has set in: The PUK is still used practically every day, but one learns where it is better to use it and when other techniques make more sense: In most cases, a soldered mount is more durable when connected to the ring rail, but thanks to a few PUK welding points, it sits exactly where it should and cannot slip during soldering. Pores that appear in the almost finished workpiece, e.g. only during polishing, are – cleaned and with the appropriate welding setting – often history with one “shot” – in the past you had to use a flame and a lot of cleaning work started all over again…

Today, we always use the PUK where it is most effective: for special materials such as steel, for reinforcing prongs, or even for setting fixing points before soldering. A few minutes with the PUK often save hours of anger. And the PUK also enables us to do work that was simply impossible before: welding on wires and eyelets in close proximity to pearls and stones, repairing the finest of joints without weakening surrounding areas with heat or destroying surface finishes – in short, a wide range of very precise work on sensitive structures.

Mr. Heinrich from the Flume company was very helpful during the installation and also gave us extensive instruction. With this solid foundation, anyone can quickly familiarize with the PUK and gain the necessary experience. You quickly get an understanding of the different programs and choosing the right settings (we are working on the PUK 3s Professional Plus, the PUK 04 has become even more comfortable here!)

I found a very competent advisor in Mr. Weise from the Lampert company for questions that still arise from time to time in everyday work with the PUK. He regularly provides me with the latest tricks and tips (the best tips are also presented in the email newsletter!), and always informs about technical news and accessories.

The PUK has made our goldsmiths more effective in both repair and fabrication and has added a variety of capabilities. I have built up an almost loving relationship with our “Pukki” and would not want to miss him. Every goldsmith working by hand has a valuable helper at his side with the PUK!

Especially when fixing the oak leaves to the frame of the crown, working with the PUK was a great relief. The PUK is an absolute asset in the daily workshop routine.

The PUK lets me use new mounting techniques since metals can be welded directly to gemstones.

When processing titanium as a jewelry metal, welding technology is essential because soldered joints are not feasible.

However, I mainly use the PUK to fix the individual parts of a workpiece before soldering. It greatly facilitates the assembly and saves a lot of working time compared to temporary connections with binding wire or staples.

The small dimensions of the PUK allowed me to install the device directly on the workbench, which means that no change of location is necessary for working with the PUK.

PUK welding is madness!

Five years ago my studio was destroyed due to a heavy flood and I didn’t know what I was going to do…..

The list of machines and tools I had lost in the flood was long, and I took my time with my new setup.

When I browsed the catalog of Bijoutil and reached the page of the PUK, I became a little curious by the classy looks of it.

I tested, and without long hesitation, I bought it with the hope of amortizing the not-so-cheap…

And you know what – it was more than worth it!!! I now work at least 3 hours a day with this device and couldn’t imagine working without it!

I was commissioned to make a branch/small tree of plum blossom by Nina Campbell to go out to China where she was designing the interior of a new house. It was to be made in bronze, for the trunk and twigs, with 18 ct yellow, green and red gold flowers. Attaching the flowers to the branch would have been very difficult without the PUK3 welder. I would have had to drill, peg and glue the flowers and leaves on which didn’t appeal to me.

The PUK 3 was the answer and worked very well with the two metals I also used it to weld on the smaller twigs and to texture the joints The texturing was the most fun, being able to change the settings to build up areas to look like moss and adding extra metal to make lumps and bumps I also used the welder to attach the legs to the grasshopper and butterfly.

The tree was too big to go under the microscope so I had to devise a way of using the welding/electrode pen free style. To do this I had to wear two pairs of magnifying glasses and a pair of green protective glasses clipped together. The lighting was difficult. I started with a 200 watt light bulb with an aluminium foil reflector but it didn’t quite do the job so I brought a very bright potholing torch which attached to my head and shone the light where ever I looked, it was brilliant and enabled me to work all over the tree easily.

I also used it to stitch the long seams on drawn tube I was using for the stems of a 120 cm tall buttercup I was making before soldering them and to make knee joints for some spiders I had commissions for.

I have many more ideas as to how to use the PUK3 welder to apply different metals to each other. I’m looking forward to developing them.

It has been an amazing piece of equipment to use.

In March 2010, I purchased a PUK3 professional plus welder with the corresponding welding microscope.

Until then, we had laser welding done off-site, which worked pretty well most of the time. However, in some cases we were not satisfied with the execution of the welds, moreover, we left a lot of time on the road. That is why we decided to purchase a laser welder. However, due to the high prices, we then gave preference to the purchase of a PUK welder.

Since we now work with the PUK, we can perfectly do all the welding work ourselves that we would otherwise have had to give away, without the unnecessary loss of time transporting parts back and forth. In addition, in this way we have eliminated the risk of our products being copied by third parties.

Before we had the PUK, we soldered everything with the flame. Soldering, however, carries a high risk for polished workpieces or set stones. With the PUK you can avoid this risk, welding saves time compared to soldering, is more practical and the results are impeccable. Welding also proves to be a great advantage for ring width changes.

I can list here the following PUK advantages: Especially workpieces with set stones can be welded without risk, productivity, i.e. quality and speed, has been increased, the device works very reliably, it is handy and can be easily used in any place, material consumption is reduced.

The assembly of two-colored stone settings or the final welding during the manufacture of a product are just a few examples of the benefits of the device.

The training by (our dealer) the company Teknik Dökum was very helpful for us. Since March 2010, we have not needed any further support and there have been no problems with the PUK. The manufacturer, Lampert company, has produced a user-friendly and reliable device.
